Pre-Release Review: WWE – ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Extras

911 vs. Doink the Clown (Hardcore TV, 8/27/94) [3:53]
The first match comes from the infamous NWA World Heavyweight Championship Tournament. The match features 911 and the wild card entry – Doink The Clown (Matt Bourne). The tournament not only featured ECW talents but those from around the world, including: 2 Cold Scorpio, Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, Osamu Nishimura, The Tazmaniac and the eventual winner Shane Douglas.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

The match itself was nothing more than a quick angle; as the contest is very one sided in the favour of 911, only lasting a few seconds. The main purpose of the match, in my opinion was to point out the differences between ECW and WWE. Paul Heyman himself proclaims following the match; in a moment which has become a staple of all ECW video packages: “This ain’t no circus… this is E.C.W.!”.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

Unfortunately Bourne’s tenure in ECW was short lived, as soon after beginning his “Bourne Again” character he departed the promotion.

Steel Cage Match: The Sandman, 2 Cold Scorpio & New Jack vs. The Public Enemy & Mikey Whipwreck (Gangsta’s Paradise, 9/16/95) [30:52]

This six-man steel cage match was originally slated to feature The Sandman joining forces with The Gangstas (New Jack and Mustafa) however as Mustafa had apparently gotten himself into some “legal issues”, therefore Sandman’s semi-regular tag team partner 2 Cold Scorpio joined the team. Their opposition for the match combines Mikey Whipwreck with The Public Enemy. Mikey, who had been training around this time with The Public Enemy dons a similar attire to Grunge and Rock, he also demonstrates his newly learned “hoodie” skills by stealing the watch and wallet of ring announcer Bob Artese.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

This match is a typical brawl; as you would have expected with many of these competitors. The cage is unable to hold all of the action as New Jack and Johnny Grunge brawl around the arena. There are a few cool spots, however the main purpose of the match was to establish Mikey Whipwreck as a truly credible challenger for The Sandman’s ECW Championship on the next Arena show.

Overall the match was a decent brawl; if you were expecting a technical masterpiece you were always going to be disappointed.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

Four Way Dance for the ECW World Heavyweight Championship: Terry Funk vs. Raven vs. Stevie Richards vs. The Sandman (The Buffalo Invasion, 5/17/97) [15:55]

Just over a month after winning the ECW Championship at their first PPV: Barley Legal. Terry Funk takes on all of his opponents from that night in a four-way dance (fatal 4-way elimination match). The match is also historic as it is the final ECW match of Stevie Richards’ career. Richards suffers a sever neck injury in the conclusion of the match when Terry Funk drops a length of guard rail onto the back of his head and neck.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

The match itself does fall a little short. Raven and Stevie have some good exchanges, baring in mind their history, however the early elimination of Raven and the final two eliminations coming so close together do hurt the match a little in my opinion.

The Dudleys vs. The Public Enemy (Detroit, MI, 1/23/99) [16:09]

This isn’t really a “match” per se, the showdown takes place after The Public Enemy left WCW and just before they began their brief WWE run.

The Public Enemy were the original ECW tag team and arguably the top act in the company during the early years. At this time in 1999 The Dudley’s were one of/if not the hottest act in the company. I took this segment to be The Public Enemy returning to ECW to help give The Dudley’s “the rub” (especially how it was presented on TV, which I will get into).

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

The segment begins with Joel Gurtner and Sign Guy Dudley trash talking with Rock and Grunge, before Bubba D-Von and Big Dick come out to beat down The Public Enemy. After they are beaten down and the Dudley’s leave, Rock and Grunge call them back to continue the beat down. Even New Jack tries to make the save, but is also beaten down by the Dudley trio and carried to the back. After several comebacks eventually The Public Enemy and Dudley’s brawl out of the arena.

This segment appears complete here, however back in 1999 only clips were used on the Hardcore TV show which made the The Dudley’s look as strong as possible as the final image we saw on TV was Public Enemy left laying. The back story to this at the time was that a mysterious benefactor had paid The Dudley’s to take out both The Public Enemy and New Jack.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

Tommy Dreamer vs. Lance Storm (Hardcore Heaven, 5/16/99) [19:02]

This match comes from the 1999 edition of Hardcore Heaven; a show remembered for the awesome Rob Van Dam vs. Jerry Lynn match. Tommy Dreamer was locked into a bitter feud during this time with The Impact Players: Justin Credible and Lance Storm. This match again isn’t a scientific match, but rather another hardcore encounter.

The match is fine, it is more of your typical weapon filled hardcore match. I feel a straight up wrestling match would have been better placed at this point on the Blu-ray.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

Japanese Death Match: Super Crazy vs. Yoshihiro Tajiri (Hardcore TV, 2/11/00) [13:05]

The final match of the Blu-ray exclusives comes from Hardcore TV. This particular match was filmed in Ft. Launderdale, FL and features Yoshihiro Tajiri taking on his most famed ECW rival: Super Crazy.

Tajiri joined ECW in late 1998 and shortly after began his feud with Super Crazy. These two always had great matches together whether they were: high-flying encounters, mat classics or like we have here a hardcore melee. This match is a Japanese Death Match; a rematch to their Mexican Death Match that took place on TNN a few weeks prior.
ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

This match is really good, but honestly you can’t go far wrong with any Crazy/Tajiri match-up. From the outset this match is a bloody brawl, we don’t see a range of weapons used here like in other hardcore matches, however we do see a liberal use of tables and chairs (many, many chairs). The use of furniture does allow for a few great spots including: a leg drop from the top rope to the floor and the very innovative finish involving a table, a pile of chairs and a top rope double foot stomp, another cool yet disgusting spot is the “war paint of blood” moment.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 Blu-ray Review

Overall the Blu-ray extras for ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 are very entertaining, most of the matches are at least decent, and I don’t believe anyone would be bored watching them.

The only real criticism I could make of the match choices here, is that they are all of the hardcore persuasion. While it was this style of wrestling that ECW was well known for, it wasn’t the only style the promotion utlized; as is illustrated with the match selection of the main feature.

Don’t forget you can pick up ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 on DVD or Blu-ray this Tuesday.

Pre-Release Review: WWE ‘ECW Unreleased Vol. 2′ DVD

“Anarchy Rulz”: The Format

Joey Styles and Tommy Dreamer hosting ECW Unreleased DVD
Joey Styles was great as the host last time, but adding Tommy Dreamer to the mix made him even better.  Dreamer added a level of spontaneity that was missing from the first volume.  You don’t get as much of a history lesson of the company overall here, but you still get to learn about some superstars that aren’t discussed often, and Dreamer is able to discuss what it was like working in the ring with a lot of them.  It’s clear that the two men are friends, and they have great chemistry.  The comedy even works here, unlike the horrendous Foley “comedy” from Falls Count Anywhere last year.  I appreciated that, for the most part, we get host segments after every 2 matches.  This allows every match to be discussed, either before or after it is featured on the set.  Styles does a great job giving a brief background for each match, and Dreamer is able to fill in some additional anecdotes.  If a third volume does happen, I’m hoping that these two are brought back again.

“Oh My God!”: The Matches

Tommy Dreamer Vs. Tazmaniac (Hardcore TV, 10/19/93) – **
These matches from early in ECW’s history (pre-Shane throwing down the belt) are always interesting to see.  This is nothing more than your average TV match that you would see on an episode of Raw today.
Terry Funk & Arn Anderson Vs. Sabu & Bobby Eaton (When Worlds Collide, 5/14/94) – ** 3/4
For historical value, you can’t complain about the inclusion of this match.  A rare collaboration between ECW and WCW allowed this match to take place, and fortunately it’s been unearthed for us here.  The match itself is kind of all over the place, but is still very enjoyable.  The video quality isn’t great, and the audio cuts in and out a bit, but for such a rare match, I can’t complain.
ECW Mick Foley Vs Terry Funk
Cactus Jack Vs. Terry Funk (Hardcore Heaven, 8/13/94) – N/A
I enjoyed this, but the actual match part doesn’t last too long.  It is still a fun segment.
ECW Tommy Dreamer Vs The Sandman
“I Quit” Match: Tommy Dreamer Vs. The Sandman (Hardcore TV, 10/4/09) – **
Even if the in-ring quality isn’t of the highest level here, this was a very enjoyable match/segment.  Pre-match interviews from Dreamer and Sandman are both included, and some of the post-match moments following this match’s famous finish are included as well.  I’m surprised it took this long for this match to be released.
Eddie Guerrero & The Steiner Brothers Vs. 2 Cold Scorpio, Dean Malenko, & Cactus Jack (Wrestlepalooza, 8/5/95) – ***
A solid match.  Feels a lot like something you would see at your average ROH (or any other indy) show nowadays.  The crowd was really into the Steiners and Eddie, which helps this match a lot.
ECW Raven Vs Tommy Dreamer
Raven Vs. Tommy Dreamer (Holiday Hell Tour, 12/29/95) – *** 1/4
Pretty much what you would expect from the Raven/Dreamer feud here.  These two have great chemistry, and make each of their matches feel different even when, in reality, they are all pretty similar.  The hardcore spots are balanced with the overall storytelling really nicely.
The Public Enemy Vs. The Gangstas (House Party, 1/5/96) – * 3/4
I would consider myself a fan of hardcore wrestling when used well, but I am not at all a fan of violence for the sake of violence.  That’s really what this match is.  There is very little attempt to tell a story that means more than “these two teams really hate each other and are going to hit each other with weapons”.  The weapon spots aren’t particularly unique either.  This was the Public Enemy’s last match before going to WCW, so it’s nice to hear their pre- and post-match speeches. That’s the highlight of this segment for sure.
Extreme Hardcore Shoot Fight: Chris Jericho Vs. Taz (Lost Battalion Hall, 4/13/96) – *
Before this match, Joey Styles describes it as a “debacle”.  That’s a pretty appropriate word to describe what’s going on here.  While I give them credit for trying something different, it didn’t work at all, and the “fight” lasts all of 3 minutes.  Most of the focus is on the antics of Bill Alfonso and Tod Gordon at ringside the whole time anyway.  At least we get that Sensai Tom Dalvano heel turn we’ve all been waiting for, though!
ECW Shane Douglas Vs 2 Cold Scorpio
ECW Television Championship Match: 2 Cold Scorpio Vs. Shane Douglas (A Matter of Respect, 5/11/96) – **** 1/4
This was a very well put together match.  It goes quite long, but it never gets dull.  There is some great technical wrestling, some great storytelling, and some great brawling.  This serves as a nice representation of ECW at its best.  A post-match segment is included as well, which is somewhat reminiscent of Shane’s infamous “throw down the belt” promo.
Sabu Vs. Chris Jericho (Plymouth Meeting, PA, 8/2/96) – *** 1/4
About what you would expect from a match between the two here.  This match suffers from a few of the problems you see in a lot of Sabu matches: a bit of sloppiness, and some of the moves seem to come out of nowhere without much meaning.  But, like most Sabu matches (and Jericho matches for that matter) it is still a lot of fun to watch.
ECW Japanese Six Man Match - ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 DVD
Dick Togo, Terry Boy, & Taka Michinoku Vs. Gran Hamada, Gran Naniwa, & Great Sasuke (Hardcore TV, 3/27/97) – ****
This is an awesome spotlight of the Michinoku Pro promotion and puroresu style.  If you are familiar with the famous six man tag team matches Dragon Gate has brought to the US in recent years, then you should expect something very similar here.  A highly entertaining, athletic match-up with non-stop action throughout.
ECW Tag Team Championship Three Way Dance: The Eliminators Vs. The Gangstas Vs. The Dudleys (Buffalo, NY, 5/17/97) – ** 1/4
This match started out as a standard tag team match between the Eliminators and the Dudleys, which was fairly dull.  When the Gangstas come out, the match picks up, and this becomes the hardcore bloodbath you would expect.  While this match does fall into the “mindless violence” category, this one worked a little bit better for me.  Some of the spots were creative, and there is an awesome finish.
The Sandman, Taz, Tommy Dreamer, & Al Snow Vs. Sabu, Rob Van Dam, Doug Furnas, & Phil LaFon (Hardcore TV, 1/5/98) – ** 1/2
This is a non-stop spotfest.  It is kept short, which works for the style of match they doing here.  You certainly won’t get bored.
ECW Shane Douglas Vs Al Snow
ECW Championship Match: Shane Douglas Vs. Al Snow (Wrestlepalooza, 5/3/98) – **
I should note that I loved the pre-match promos that were included in here, and there is a nice post-match moment as well.  The actual match, though, leaves a bit to be desired.  There isn’t anything wrong with it, but it doesn’t really hook your attention.  It’s kind of just there.
ECW Tag Team Championship Match: Chris Candido & Lance Storm Vs. Sabu & Rob Van Dam (Hardcore TV, 6/29/98) – ** 1/4
Another short, high adrenaline match here.  I would have preferred a longer match here, with a bit more storytelling, but it works well enough as a TV style match.  There are a few nice spots throughout, and each man is given his time to shine.
Taz Vs Bam Bam Bigelow ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 DVD
FTW Championship Three Way Dance: Sabu Vs. Taz Vs. Bam Bam Bigelow (ECW Arena, 8/8/98) – **** 1/2
The “indy wrestling” side of ECW was brought out nicely in this match.  The action is pretty crazy the entire time, and there are a good number of false finishes towards the end of the match.  The match actually starts as a singles match between Sabu and Taz, but Bam Bam gets involved pretty early on.
ECW Tag Team Championship Match: The Dudleys Vs. Spike Dudley & Balls Mahoney (Hardcore TV, 8/23/99) – ** 1/2
You get a lot of your classic Dudley Boys moments here: vicious chair shots, lots of heel heat, and even the appearance of some flaming tables.  Like some of the other tag matches on this set, this match isn’t too subtle, but it’s entertaining enough.
ECW Championship Match: Mike Awesome Vs. Rhino (ECW on TNN, 10/1/99) – * 1/2
A nice showcase for Mike Awesome, but this isn’t anything more than that.  A strange choice for a DVD release.
ECW Unreleased Vol. 2 DVD - Super Crazy Dive
Extreme Three Way Dance: Yoshihiro Tajiri Vs. Jerry Lynn Vs. Super Crazy (November to Remember, 11/7/99) – *** 1/4
Very fun match; these guys all had really amazing chemistry.  I went into this expecting a total spotfest, but you got some nice storytelling throughout as well.  Don’t worry, there are still some very fun spots too!
ECW Television Championship Match: Rob Van Dam Vs. Mikey Whipwreck (ECW on TNN, 1/28/00) – ** 1/4
A solid TV match.  About what you would expect from these two guys.  RVD does some cool moves, and Mikey mostly gets his ass kicked.
ECW Championship Three Way Dance: Justin Credible Vs. Jerry Lynn Vs. Steve Corino (ECW on TNN, 9/29/00) – ***
This is how you do a great TV match.  The action is solid and you get a worthwhile match, but the finish still helps build to a PPV.  There is a lot going on here, but I felt it paid off pretty well, and made me want to see the next step in the feud.

“This is Extreme”: Closing Thoughts

It’s tough to review this DVD without just echoing the sentiments of my review of Volume 1.  Yet again, we are given a great DVD with nice variety to the matches.  As I alluded to earlier, the biggest differences come in terms of match quality and overall match variety.  There is a clear step down in match quality on this DVD.  The matches aren’t bad, per se, but there are less classics than you got on the first set.  There still were very few matches that I didn’t enjoy, though, and the ones that weren’t great still had interesting things going on.  This could be an interesting promo, a great storyline, or the insane violence that became a calling card of ECW.  At the same time, you still get at least one boda fide classic in the Taz/Sabu/Bam Bam three way dance and a very underrated hidden gem between Shane Douglas and Scorpio.   It isn’t until the end of the DVD and some of the TNN matches that you see some matches that are simply mediocre: nothing horrible, but nothing interesting to note either.
ECW Dudley Boys Flaming Table
The match variety is much more balanced across this DVD, though.  On the previous Unreleased set, there was only one “senseless violence” match (and I mean that in the best way) on the entire set, and these matches were a staple of ECW.  We get much more of them here.  We also get some matches that are driven by over the top storylines and some interesting experiments in addition to great wrestling matches.  Since the last set was filled mostly with great wrestling matches, it may seem like the better set if you’re looking only at snowflakes and match ratings.  However, I think there is a benefit to giving more variety to the DVD.  It’s tough to decide which direction I prefer more overall; I enjoyed both sets quite a bit.
Much like the previous edition, I think this set is a must buy for any old school ECW fans.  You are going to get a number of different matches, a lot of which are hidden gem that have not been seen in a long time.  Styles and Dreamer do a great job as hosts, and add a lot to the matches.  It was rare that I didn’t get a good explanation as to the importance of a match on the set.  You’ll no doubt have fun watching through this set.  A very easy recommendation as we continue through a great 2013 for home video releases.

WWE The Greatest Superstars Of Wrestlemania Review

If you want this dvd I highly advise you to go out and get it the match listing is brilliant and the break in between the matches telling you what wrestlemania its from and all about the rivalry is awesome but this dvd is worth buying alone for some of the classics matches featured on this set the match listing is.

1. Sgt Slaughter vs. Hulk Hogan from Wrestlemania 7. I think everyone knows who is going to win this match Sgt slaughter who is a foreign and nobody likes him or Hulk Hogan a massive powerhouse who has the power of Hulkamania the winner of this match is Hulk Hogan but this is one of my favourite main events and matches from wrestlemania so for me I rate this match 8/10.

2. Triple H vs. Batista from Wrestlemania 21. This match was the first of this rivalry and featured many other matches to come at other pay per views like Vengeance and Backlash but in my opinion this is my favourite match of this rivalry. This match alone I would spend £2 on to watch, this match is a classic the thing that I don't really like about this match is that Ric Flair keeps trying to interfere because Batista left Evolution a group that featured two promising youngsters and two legends so Batista could fight for the world heavyweight title so Batista challenged him and believe it or not Batista won he put the icing on the cake with his vicious finisher Batista bomb which is a massive power bomb where he throws you down with such force for me this match is 10/10.

3. Shawn Michaels vs. Chris Jericho from Wrestlemania 19. This match a lot of people seem to like but I don't know why they do in my opinion this match is slow sloppy and very boring if you like fast paced wrestling buy Rey Mysterio's 3 disc set if you don't like fast paced wrestling then this is your match but I rate this match 6/10.

4. Undertaker vs. Randy Orton from Wrestlemania 21. This match was a very good fight and the way wwe built the match up was very good as Randy is known as " the legend killer" he tried to defeat The Undertaker he tried but he just couldn't defeat him these two had a amazing rivalry in 2005 with there Hell In A Cell match at Armageddon and there handicap Casket match at No Mercy but I think this was the best out of the rivalry I think this match is awesome I rate this 9/10.

5. Mick Foley vs. Edge from Wrestlemania 22. This match was the 4th wrestling match I had ever seen and this is definitely in my top 10 favourite list. Honestly this match is amazing the amount of crazy weapons used the weapons that were used are Flaming Table, Gasoline, Stop Sign, Metal Tray, Barbed Wire, Barbed Wire Baseball Bat, Thumbtacks and many more this match is still one of my favourites after two years of wrestling I rate this match 10/10.

6. Bret Hart vs. Yokozuna from Wrestlemania 10. This match doesn't last very long for a wrestlemania main event but its a hell of a lot better than Bam Bam Bigelow vs Lawrence Taylor which took place at the next wrestlemania. Around this time Yokozuna rarely lost but in this match Bret somehow managed to pull off the victory this match may only be 15 mins but this is a really good match I advise you to watch this I rate this very good main event 8/10.

7. The Rock vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan from Wrestlemania 18. This match is a classic icon vs icon match honestly the build up for this match was fantastic! The fans loved the fact they were finally going to see the match they never thought they would ever see the Peoples Champ or The Hulk? This match was incredibly awesome the winner of this was the Peoples Champ The Rock this match was amazing I rate this 10/10.

8. John Bradshaw Layfield vs. John Cena from Wrestlemania 21. Three matches from Wrestlemania 21 are featured on this dvd but this was the most historic in my opinion. The batista match was also very historic and the Undertaker but after starting off in 2002 as an amateur he made it to Wrestlemania and made his wishes come true that was probably John Cenas favourite match of all time I will never forget that match I definitely rate this match 9/10.

9. Randy Orton vs. Rey Mysterio vs Kurt Angle from Wrestlemania 22. This match was a triple threat match where the champion doesn't even need to be pinned to lose his title if Randy pins Rey or Rey pins Randy it still counts and the person who got the pin will win the belt. This match was very emotional because five months before this Rey lost a great friend and a great guy Eddie Guerrero Eddie was inducted in to the WWE Hall Of Fame and in this match Rey won the belt after wrestling for 10+ years he finally won it I rate this match 10/10.

10. Triple H vs. Chis Jericho from Wrestlemania 18. Everybody remembers this Wrestlemania because the epic Rock Hogan match but this match was just as good and just as important. This match is very good but one of the downer is that Triple H has to fight with a injured knee because a week ago Jericho attacked him on Raw but Triple H still won and reclaimed what rightfully should be his the Undisputed WWF Championship I rate this match 9/10.

11. The Rock vs. Steve Austin from Wrestlemania 15. These two had classic matches at Wrestlemania they had one every two years since 1999. This match was a no disqualification match throughout most of it the two of them were out brawling in the crowd but despite the brawling this is one of Wrestlemanias best matches I rate this match 10/10.

Tick-C’s Treasures: The WWF Attitude Collection DVD Box Set

Hi and welcome to Tick-C’s Treasures!
Every fortnight I’ll be showcasing some of the treasures I have found throughout the years collecting WWE DVDs.
Let’s kick this off with one of the gems that I acquired a few years ago from eBay…
WWF Attitude Collection DVD Box set
I was born in 1985 in Preston England, and I can reminisce watching the earlier PPVs at a young age on Sky television (back then on Sky Movies, my first one being WrestleMania 8). I grew up through the “Rock and Wrestling” era of professional wrestling by swapping video tapes with friends. As I got older, the World Wrestling Federation evolved, to a heavily gimmicked era in the early ’90s which I enjoyed watching so much. The sport’s resurgence made it socially acceptable to watch grown men in colorful outfits beat the snot out of each other. But I believe WWF was struggling for ratings survival while a cultural shift in the viewing audience’s taste was occurring. ‘Saying your prayers and taking your vitamins’ had lost its luster amongst the rebellious masses that were now ‘stratusfied’ by ‘flipping the bird’ and ‘laying the smackdown’.
However, I was only 12 or 13 years old when the Attitude Era of WWF hit the screens and remember my mother telling me off for watching WWF TV then, but I would somehow manage to record and watch WWF TV week in week out in my room on my own as I was hooked! The era had a striking swing to more adult-oriented programming content, which was accomplished in numerous ways, including an upsurge in the level of portrayed violence and the combination of sexually charged, horrific, or otherwise politically incorrect characters and story-lines created for shock value. And guess what? It worked. Well, it worked for me anyway.
WWE Attitude Collection DVD Box set
My teenage years went hand in hand with the Attitude Era. From Stone Cold, The Hardyz, The Dudleys, The Godfather, The Rock, D-Generation X, Trish Status, Lita, the list goes on and on, who I grew up with, living vicariously through what they did each week on television.
So, with that in mind, I was quite excited to learn that Silver Vision had a box set dedicated to this time period in professional wrestling. Conversely I had been collecting wrestling DVDs for quite some time before picking up this jewel. I had all the separate VHS’ from this set when they were released previously, however I never had the outer box pictured above with the DVDs. The complete set was released in 2002 I believe but I only managed to get hold of it on eBay.co.uk a few years ago. I remember a lot of bidders on this particular set but I was prepared to pay big bucks and managed to be the highest bidder with a price tag of around the £190 (US $300~) mark. Some people may feel that’s quite the outrageous spend but for me reliving and reviving those past memories, every penny has been worth it!
For the newer WWE fans who simply weren’t around for the Attitude years, or maybe fans that dropped off before the era started, this set is a great summary and reminder. If you can’t get hold of the originals then it’s not the end of the world, since many were re-released to the UK under the WWE banner recently and are cheap to find on various websites, so it won’t burn a hole in your pockets to relive these great moments.
I’ll be back soon with more treasures right here on WrestlingDVDNews.com.

Review: WWE “ECW Unreleased Vol. 1″ DVD (3 Discs)

Check out the awesome website that provided this information wrestlingdvdnews
http://www.wrestlingdvdnews.com/review-wwe-ecw-unreleased-vol-1-dvd-joeystyles-heymanhustle/24242/

I didn’t start watching wrestling until 2011 and missed out on the ECW era in Philly.  I still enjoyed countless other independent wrestling shows at the famed ECW Arena (RIP), and they featured a lot of the men who made ECW what it was.  The sights and sounds of ECW will always be important to me, from the beauty(?) of the arena itself, to Joey Styles’ commentary, to ring announcer Bob Artese, to referees Finnigan and Molineaux, to everyone’s favorite ringside fan John “Hat Guy” Bailey, to even that Atlas Security guard who looks identical to Don West.  I often frequented an independent company back in the early 2000′s called 3PW that featured a lot of those same people and many of the wrestlers who were involved in ECW.  And the absolute greatest wrestling night of my life was sitting front row for the “Hardcore Homecoming” event that ran at the ECW Arena the night before One Night Stand.  That all being said, even though I didn’t ever attend an actual ECW show, it still is an important promotion to me.
I know you didn’t come here expecting to read my life history, but I wanted to give some background to explain just where my expectations are any time an ECW compilation set is released.  When I saw the match listing, my excitement went up even a little bit more.  Fortunately, this DVD does not disappoint at all, and is filled with a lot of classic matches that shockingly have not yet been released on a WWE DVD set.  Disc 1 runs about 2 hours, Disc 2 runs about 2 hours 15 minutes, and Disc 3 runs just short of 3 hours. The DVD is rated TV-14.  Some foul language is edited out, and a lot of the original music has been replaced.

“The Land of Extreme”: The Format

ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVDECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVDECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVDECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVD
This DVD is set up like any other match compilation released by WWE in the past. Joey Styles is, of course, the perfect person to serve as our host for this journey. Although he doesn’t show the same level of outlandish charisma Dusty showed on the Clash DVD, he still comes across as an expert on the subject who can talk about ECW because he lived through it himself. He explains the importance of each match pretty well for those who are coming in with no knowledge of ECW at all. The Tazz/Dreamer match on Disc 3 in particular required a lot of explanation, and Joey does a great job breaking down a fairly confusing situation in a short period of time.  As I’ll say during pretty much any of these match compilations, I wish we could get individual introductions to each match to allow us to know the build-up to the match. On this set in particular, there aren’t any matches that feel like they were filler. Each match clearly had some build-up going into it, and I’ve familiarized myself with ECW enough at this point to piece everything together even without an introduction for every match. For a new fan, though, I think more introductions would be great.
The match breakdown works out pretty nicely for this set. The first disc features matches from 1993 to 1996, the second disc features matches from 1997 to 1998, and the third disc features matches from 1999 to 2001. This works out nicely to be the “early days” of ECW, the “glory days” of ECW, and what I’ll call the “production values era” of ECW. Unlike WCW, the quality of ECW’s product didn’t really go downhill in the dying days of the company.  Although the 3rd disc of this particular set did have the weakest match quality, it’s not by much, and it’s mostly because that disc has a lot of shorter matches.  Therefore, I think you see a lot of consistency across the discs from an in-ring standpoint. Where you most clearly see changes in the product, though, is the changes in production values. Most of the matches on Disc 1 take place at the ECW Arena, and as the company expands, the audiences get bigger, as is seen across Discs 2 and 3. I may be biased, but I’ve always felt that the bigger buildings took something away from ECW. It’s not a big change, though, and you remain consistently entertained across each disc.

“Oh My God!”: The Matches

ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVD
NWA World Championship: Shane Douglas Vs. 2 Cold Scorpio (Hardcore TV, 8/27/94) – ** 1/2
This match represents one of the bigger moments in the history of professional wrestling, and it’s surprising it hasn’t been released on an ECW set until now. Unfortunately, the match itself isn’t fantastic. Fortunately, the entire post-match segment is included. Douglas nails the promo, and this serves as a great kick-start to the overall set.
Tommy Dreamer Vs. Raven (Hostile City Showdown, 4/15/95) – ***
This match represents the “garbage” matches we saw in the early days of ECW, and also is a good representative for one of ECW’s biggest feuds.  We get a nice pre-match promo from Raven & Stevie Richards, and the match itself is a lot of fun. You don’t see a lot of wrestling holds, but the story they tell is entertaining.  This match also helps show how vital the Philly crowd was to ECW’s early success.
Dean Malenko & 2 Cold Scorpio Vs. Eddy Guerrero & Taz (Heatwave, 7/15/95) – ****
A very strong tag team match between four great talents. These four were all very over with the crowd (especially Guerrero & Malenko), and their styles mesh together well.  Unfortunately, you can’t really understand the pre-match “war of words” between Scorpio and Taz’s manager, Paul E. Dangerously, because the audio at the ECW Arena was so poor. You can’t blame the WWE for this one though, they worked with what they had.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVD
ECW Television Championship: Eddy Guerrero Vs. Dean Malenko (Hardcore TV, 7/28/95) – *** 1/2
A solid match between these two, if not a bit short. Nowhere near the level of the 2-out-of-3 falls farewell match they had, but anytime they got in the ring, you knew you were going to get something good.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVD
Shane Douglas Vs. Cactus Jack (Cyberslam, 2/17/96) – *** 1/2
Another great “brawl” style match that showcased two men vital to the rise of ECW in the mid-90′s.  Foley played a great heel as Cactus Jack in ECW, and it shows in this match.  This match also inspired the infamous Rock/Mankind “I Quit” match in its use of handcuffs and chair shots.  I’m actually surprised this match was included on the set in the “concussion-conscious” world we now live in. The chair shots are really hard to watch.
Chris Jericho Vs. 2 Cold Scorpio (The Doctor is In, 8/3/96) – **** 1/4
A fantastic wrestling match between two great athletes. It’s good to see Scorpio get a strong showing on this DVD, between this match and the aforementioned tag team match. He’s an underrated worker from the early days of ECW. Jericho is his usual great self, and the two men have strong chemistry. Its a close contest, but this may be the best match on the DVD.
ECW Tag Team Championship Tables & Ladders Match: Rob Van Dam & Sabu Vs. The Eliminators (Cyberslam, 2/22/97) – *** 3/4
Speaking of underrated, The Eliminators of Perry Saturn & John Kronus were one of the top tag teams of their era.  The table and ladder spots are well constructed, and once the action really starts to get going, the match becomes a lot of fun.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVD
Sabu Vs. Taz (Barely Legal, 4/13/97) – **** 1/4
Knowing that this match was built up for a year leading to ECW’s first PPV, Barely Legal, you can really feel the “big match” atmosphere. The storytelling in this match is superb. It epitomizes what ECW was best at: combining great wrestling with the hardcore action they became famous for.  The match is given plenty of time to grow, and the finish works nicely.  The DVD also includes the entire post-match segment, which I won’t spoil, but is great.
ECW Championship Match: Bam Bam Bigelow Vs. Shane Douglas (November to Remember, 11/30/97) – *** 3/4
The only thing I can compare this match to is a more wrestling-based version of the Cena/Lesnar match from Extreme Rules a few months ago. Bigelow looks like a total monster in this match, and even as a heel, Douglas, in front of his hometown crowd, plays the good guy trying to take down this “immovable object”.  It may sound like this can get boring over the course of a 20+ minute match, but it really doesn’t.

ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVD
ECW Tag Team Championship Match: Rob Van Dam & Sabu Vs. Hayabusa & Jinsei Shinzaki (Heatwave, 8/15/98) – ****
When the matches for this set were first announced, nothing got me more excited than the fact that a Hayabusa match was going to be featured on a WWE DVD. I had seen a few of his matches on old VHS tapes back in the day, and he is very impressive. I wasn’t as familiar with Jinsei Shinzaki, but he also looked great in this match. By this point, RVD had really come into his own as well, and the four men put together a crazy, exciting match.
ECW Television Championship Match: Rob Van Dam Vs. Jerry Lynn (Hardcore TV, 8/15/98) – *** 1/2
Of course, the RVD/Lynn feud was a huge part of ECW, and although this match is not as good as their classic match from Living Dangerously, it still is very good, especially for a TV match.  I had forgotten just how great RVD’s character was in ECW, and this match is a really good showcase for his cocky “Mr. Monday Night” character.  The in-ring chemistry between RVD and Lynn is great as well, so both men come out looking great regardless of who wins.

ECW Championship Match: Shane Douglas Vs. Taz (Guilty as Charged, 1/10/99) – ***
Although this match is quite good when the two men are in the ring, I’ve never been a big fan of “brawl around the crowd” matches, and this match featured a lot of that.  The finish of the match is a lot of fun, though, and shows that even if he wasn’t the greatest in the ring, Shane Douglas is an excellent storyteller.  It’s impossible to not get invested in his matches.
Impact Players Vs. Rob Van Dam & Jerry Lynn (Heatwave, 7/18/99) – **** 1/4
It didn’t really come as a surprise that a match featuring RVD, Jerry Lynn, Justin Credible, and Lance Storm was as good as it was.  There are a lot of different storylines going on throughout the match, and they balance each one well, while still finding time for the great athleticism these four are known for.

ECW Championship Match: Mike Awesome Vs. Masato Tanaka (November to Remember, 11/7/99) – **** 1/4
This is a unique match in that from the bell, the match is immediately running at full. The high spots come from the start of the match, and the two men never slow down. Like RVD & Lynn, Awesome & Tanaka had great chemistry in the ring, and they made each other look really good in the match.  They are able to fit a nice story into a relatively short match, and some of the spots throughout the match are awesome (no pun intended) as well.

ECW Championship Match: Taz Vs. Tommy Dreamer (Cyberslam, 4/22/00) – **
Forget “Unreleased”, this match had never been seen by anyone but the live crowd there that night until now.  At the time, Taz was working for the WWF, and he made a guest appearance to beat Mike Awesome (who had just signed with WCW) for the ECW Championship.  He wanted to give his title match to Tommy Dreamer, and the match is seen here for the first time. The match itself is nothing special, but for historical significance and a great post-match segment, it’s a must watch.
ECW Championship Match: Tommy Dreamer Vs. Justin Credible (Cyberslam, 4/22/00) – ** 3/4
This match flows right out of the segment that followed the Taz/Dreamer match, and is a decent match between the two men.  Credible was a great heel during the last couple of years of ECW, and it shows here.  Again, even if the in-ring action isn’t anything special, the overall segment is great.

ECW Television Championship Match: Rhino Vs. The Sandman (Heatwave, 7/16/00) – ** 1/2
A good spotlight match for Rhino, who gets a pretty good match out of The Sandman. Even though he was a fan favorite, The Sandman wasn’t exactly a fantastic ring worker, but when booked well, he could still put together a good match. The run-ins at the end of the match work out well, and some of the weapons spots are good. My biggest gripe is that they left in the entire Sandman entrance, which goes on for like 5 minutes. Sure, it’s a TON of fun to be a part of that when you are in the crowd, but on TV, it’s really boring, especially without “Enter Sandman” playing.
ECW Television Championship Match: Rhino Vs. Spike Dudley (Massacre on 34th Street, 12/3/00) – ** 3/4
I wasn’t expecting too much from this match, and I was pleasantly surprised by it.  Spike Dudley had pretty much perfected his role in the “big vs. little” match by this point, and Rhino was super over as a heel, so they played off each other well. I also really liked the finish, even if it isn’t a total clean win.
Jerry Lynn Vs. Christian York (Hardcore TV, 12/30/00) – ***
I hadn’t realized that Jerry Lynn ever worked as a heel, and he plays the role surprisingly well here. Before the match, we get a great promo from Lynn’s manager Cyrus, who was probably the most hated man in ECW in 2000. I was glad to see him get some time on this set.  Christian York was a strong technical wrestler, so he worked well with Jerry Lynn, and they put together an above-average television match.
Yoshihiro Tajiri & Mikey Whipwreck Vs. Kid Kash & Super Crazy Vs. The FBI (Guilty as Charged, 1/7/01) – *** 1/2
This match was the fun spot-fest you would expect with the six men involved.  Each guy was given time to hit their spots, and the action comes consistently. Fun match.

“And they… can all… kiss… my… ass!”: Overall Thoughts

ECW Unreleased Vol. 1 DVD
As you can tell from looking through my match thoughts, this DVD was very strong.  Per my match ratings, I had six matches that rated at **** or **** 1/4, and a large majority of the matches were, at the very least, solid.  Every match on the set served a purpose. The only two matches on the set that I didn’t really care for (Douglas/Scorpio and Taz/Dreamer) are still very important moments and have excellent post-match promos that make up for the match itself.  Unlike past ECW sets, I think the WWE really went out of their way to show just how diverse the ECW product was.  No two matches on the set really feel the same.  You get everything from technical wrestling, to weapons matches, to high flying matches, to spotfests, to strong-style contests, and everything in between.  Because of this, you don’t start to feel bored when you get halfway through the set. Although I watched it over three weeknights, I could easily see myself taking a “lazy Sunday” and sitting through the entire 7+ hours without any problems.
Because none were listed in the content listing, I wasn’t expecting any promos or segments on this set, but I was pleasantly surprised with just how many promos we end up getting throughout the set. If a match featured either a pre-match or post-match promo, they are included in their entirety.  As I stated above, the Douglas promo when he throws down the NWA belt is, in my opinion, one of the greatest moments in the history of professional wrestling, and Tommy Dreamer’s ECW title win in 2000 is also a great moment in ECW history.  Add in some other great promos from Taz, Shane Douglas, RVD, Cyrus and others throughout the set, and you get a nice bonus to an already impressive set of matches.
I was also happy to see that there wasn’t too much revisionist history going on here.  Sure, Cactus Jack would go on to bigger success in the WWE, but he was a huge part of the early days of ECW, and I don’t think his match was included solely because he’s Mick Foley like his match on the “Clash of the Champions” set.  I was also pleasantly surprised to see Shane Douglas nicely represented on this set.  He was a really big name throughout ECW’s history.  We also get a nice spotlight on guys like 2 Cold Scorpio and Rhino who often get looked over.  SI was a bit disappointed the Dudley Boyz didn’t get a match on this set, but they weren’t really in ECW all that long, so it makes sense.  The only name missing from this set that really is disappointing is Terry Funk.  I know a lot of his matches have already been released, but I’m sure that the WWE could find another good match with him in it to include on this set.
Even though I did really enjoy this set, there are still a few minor quibbles I have with it.  I wish that they would have followed what they did with Rise & Fall of ECW and given the set a TV-MA rating so that language didn’t have to be bleeped.  This becomes particularly problematic during Taz’s post-match speech after losing to Tommy Dreamer, where it feels like every 5th word he says is bleeped out.  Also, even though this set did have a really nice, eclectic mix of matches, I wish there would have been one of the barbed wire/flaming table/crazy weapons matches included.  We get a taste of this with the Raven/Dreamer match, but there isn’t really a crazy, bloody match that came to represent ECW.  Sure, chairs and tables find their way into a large majority of the matches on the set, but I still would have liked to see one of the really crazy weapons match since it’s the only type of match that feels absent from the set.  Fortunately, these are very minor complaints that don’t really do much to detract from any otherwise great set.
I couldn’t recommend this set highly enough.  You get a great collection of matches, some classic moments, and a clear sense of what made ECW so special.  As I said at the start of this review, I have a bit of a hometown bias, but I also had very high expectations coming into this set.  I can’t say I was surprised that it lived up to those expectations, but I’m certainly glad it did.  If you aren’t familiar with ECW at all, I still would recommend you first watch the documentary on Rise & Fall of ECW, but this compilation serves as a nice second course.  I would even put this set slightly above the BloodSport set, which is also very good and worth going out of your way to get.  It’s hard to compare this set to the Edge DVD that came out a few months ago since that one also contained a documentary, but between these 2 sets, we’ve got 2 clear frontrunners for DVD’s of the year.
